Recognize Hunger Awareness Month with Save the Children

According to the Save the Children’s Childhood in the Time of COVID report, an estimated 17 million children in the United States are going hungry during the pandemic. This number is up by 6 million since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. During Hunger Awareness Month this June, we’re spotlighting Save the Children and their work promoting children’s wellness, especially during the era of the coronavirus pandemic.

What is Hunger Awareness Month?

Food is an essential part of life that should be nutritious, fun, and part of a family’s daily traditions. Yet, for millions of adults and children, having steady access to food isn’t easy. Hunger Awareness Month raises awareness of the growing food insecurity happening across the country. Supporters can get involved to make a difference by volunteering at food banks, donating to non-profit charities such as Save the Children that work to combat child hunger, and raising awareness via social media.

Who is Save the Children?

Since 1932, Save the Children has been on the ground in rural communities providing support to America’s most isolated and under-served children. Save the Children understands the challenge rural hunger presents and is leveraging their resources, advocacy power and expertise to ensure all children have the fuel they need to succeed.

What is Save the Children doing to support healthy kids?

In collaboration with schools and community-based organizations, Save the Children supports the preparation and delivery of millions of meals in rural communities across the United States so that children’s bellies are full and their minds are ready to learn.

Through their political advocacy arm Save the Children Action Network, Save the Children advocates for strengthening government programs to meet the need in rural communities. Save the Children is also designing and testing new solutions and scalable models for addressing rural child hunger- For example, launching a cash transfer pilot program and distributing food boxes.

Since jumpstarting these efforts in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Save the Children’s rural hunger initiative has made an immediate impact for children through programs, advocacy and thought leadership.
